Drug Uses
Ortho Evra is a contraceptive skin patch and is used to prevent from pregnancy. It contains two hormones, estrogen and progestin. Ortho Evra cannot protect you from sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS.
How Taken
Ortho Evra uses a cycle of 28 days. One patch is applied on the skin each week for three weeks in a row (21 days). Do not apply a patch on the forth week; you should have your menstruation this week. The patches should be changed on the same day of the week. Consult your doctor about the appropriate time to start using Ortho Evra and the need to use a second birth control method in the beginning. The patches should be applied on a dry and clean skin. You can put them on the buttocks, on the abdomen, on the upper outer arm or torso. Do not put patches on the breast. Make sure the patches are not rubbed by your clothing. You can change the places of the new patches to avoid irritation of the skin. Do not use creams, oils, make-up or powder on the areas you apply the patches. If a patch caused skin irritation, remove it and apply a new patch on a new area of the skin. Use only one patch at a time.
Warnings/Precautions
The risks of using Ortho Evra increase significantly in case you: smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, have or have had clotting disorders, heart attack, stroke, chest pain (angina pectoris), and cancer of the breast or reproductive organs, jaundice, or malignant or benign liver tumors. The efficiency of this contraceptive method may decline if you are weighing more than 90 kg and in such case consult your doctor before using it. Ortho Evra falls into the FDA pregnancy category X which means they can cause serious defects to a fetus. Do not use birth control pills if you are pregnant. Consult your doctor before taking Ortho Evra if you are breast feeding, because the hormones contained by the pills may pass into breast milk or may reduce its production.
Missed Dose
In case you forget to change your patch:1) At the beginning of a patch cycle - Week 1: in case you forget to put a patch, there is a possibility to become pregnant and you must use a second contraceptive method for a week. Apply the patch as soon as you remember. You have to start all over again and to have a new day for patch change.
2) In the middle of a patch cycle - Week 2 or Week 3: in case you forget to change your patch for one or two days, change it as soon as you remember and apply the next one on the regular day for patch change. You do not have to use a second contraceptive method. Week 2 or Week 3: in case you forget to change your patch for more than two days, there is a possibility to become pregnant. You should start a new 28-days cycle as soon as you remember by applying a new patch. You have to start all over again and to have a new day for patch change. You must use a second contraceptive method for the first week of the new cycle.
3) At the end of a patch cycle - Week 4: in case you forget to remove your patch, do that as soon as you remember. Start the next cycle on the regular day for patch change after the 28th day. You do not need a second contraceptive method.
4) At the beginning of the next patch cycle - Week 1 (day 1): in case you forget to put a patch, there is a possibility to become pregnant. Apply the patch as soon as you remember. You have to start all over again and to have a new day for patch change. You must use a second contraceptive method for the first week of the new cycle.
Possible Side Effects
Ortho Evra is a combination of two hormones and may cause the following common side effects: -breast tenderness and enlargement
-headache
-nausea
-menstrual changes
-abdominal cramps and bloating
-vaginal discharge.
Storage
Ortho Evra should be kept at a temperature of 25�C (77�F); fluctuations of the temperature are allowed to 15-30�C (59-86�F). Keep the patches in their original protective pouches and apply a patch immediately after you remove it from its protective pouch. Ortho Evra should not be kept in the refrigerator. Throw away the used patches very carefully because they still contain active hormones. Do not throw the patches in the toilet.
Overdose
Ortho Evra is not expected to cause an overdose because the patches release equal amounts of the hormones. Use only one patch at a time. There are no serious side effects in the cases when children have taken large doses of oral contraceptives by accident. An overdose may cause nausea, vomiting and vaginal bleeding. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor.
