Drug Uses
Prevacid is a medicine that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used for the treatment and prevention of stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid is also used for other conditions that not listed in this leaflet.
How Taken
Prevacid is in the form of long-lasting capsules and is taken orally. The usual dosage is one capsule a day. Use the medicine exactly as directed; do not take less or more pills, and do not use the drug more often than prescribed. The capsules should not be crushed or chewed; swallow them whole. You should continue the intake even if you feel well. Consult your doctor before you stop taking Prevacid.
Warnings/Precautions
Consult your doctor before taking Prevacid if you have liver disease. You may not be able to use Prevacid or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Consult your doctor before taking Prevacid in case you are pregnant. The medicine falls into the FDA pregnancy category B and it is not expected to harm a fetus. It is not known in the drug passes into breast milk. It is recommended that you talk to your doctor before using Prevacid if you are breast feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor immediately and stop taking Prevacid if you develop any of these side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives). If you have any of the following less serious side effects, continue using Prevacid but inform your doctor:
-diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain;
-dizziness; or
-headache.
Other different side effects that are not listed here may also occur. If you notice some unusual effects or conditions, inform your doctor about them.
Storage
Prevacid should be kept at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose of Prevacid, immediately search for medical help. The symptoms caused by an overdose are not known.
More Information
There are no restrictions on food, drinks or performed activities during a treatment with Prevacid, unless your doctor advised you something else.
